Farm Photo Journal
April 2015

Here we are at the beginning of April, and it's planting time again! On Monday Jeff used one of our favorite tractors, this Allis Chalmers G, to plant the first spring radishes, spinach, arugula, and baby turnips.
Monday was the first time conditions were right for field planting, but we've been planting in our greenhouses and hoophouses for over a month now. Each year in February and March we start thousands of lettuce seedlings like these in our greenhouse. Then in early April we transplant the seedlings into our hoophouses where they grow to maturity in just 5 weeks.
Recently a couple of young neighbors spent an afternoon helping out with some hoophouse planting.

Together we planted bok choy and swiss chard for our spring CSA members.

The final job of the day was to feed a couple of week-old lambs whose mother wasn't able to do the job.
Most of the time a ewe has no trouble keeping up with her motherly duties. Occasionally, however, a frazzled mama needs a hand caring for her babies. That's where the bottle comes in.

Fortunately for us, our other livestock don't require nearly as much attention right now. Our rough-and-tumble Berkshire pigs take everything in stride as long as we keep the feed trough full. Now that the weather has warmed up, they spend their days alternately digging in the dirt and taking long naps in the sun. Seems they are as happy as we are for the arrival of spring!
