Meet your Farmers
Sandhill Family Farms was established by Matt and Peg Sheaffer and family in 2000. We grow high-quality organic produce, eggs and meat for our community. We have a reputation for quality, consistency and reliability. Our members love the direct connection to our land, our animals and to us, the folks who grow their food.
We started the original farm, Sandhill Organics, 16 years ago in East Troy, Wisconsin. In 2004, Sandhill Organics found a new home at Prairie Crossing, a conservation community in Grayslake, Illinois. Over the years, Sandhill Organics grew into a successful and widely-respected CSA farm growing certified-organic produce on 45 acres at Prairie Crossing.
In 2011 we secured additional acreage by purchasing a 45-acre farm in Brodhead, WI. At that time we partnered with Jen and Jeff Miller to form Sandhill Family Farms. For the next 5 seasons we worked together to grow produce at both the Illinois farm and the Wisconsin farm. By working together, we were able to expand production without compromising our commitment to quality, to our customers, and most importantly, to our young children.
We are very proud of the work we did together, and now it is time to simplify. We will continue to farm in Brodhead, but starting in 2017 Jen and Jeff will operate the Grayslake farm as an independent farm under a new name—Prairie Wind Family Farm. Between the two farms, we will continue to serve all of our current CSA members at all of our current pickup sites. Sandhill will serve members picking up in Glenview, Northfield, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, Bartlett, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale and Downers Grove. Prairie Grass will serve members picking up in Deerfield, Evanston, Lake Forest, Allstate, Oak Park, Vernon Hills and at the Grayslake farm.
Thank you for supporting local foods, healthy communities and family-scale farming. We couldn't do it without you!
